Kindle Review – New Kindle 4 E-Ink Book Reader Models Offer Fantastic Reading at Incredible Prices
Among the flurry of new Kindle book reader products hitting the shelves this year are various models of the next generation of Kindles, known as the Kindle 4.
The new Pearl E-Ink screens – three new models are featured in our Kindle review: the Kindle 4 base line starter model, the Kindle Touch and the Kindle Touch 3G.
At $79, the user is presented with advertising on the home screen and various other pages. There is a $109 version available that eliminates these on-screen offers.
Easily Hold In One Hand
Weighing less than 6 ounces, it is smaller and lighter than Kindle 3 (now called the Kindle Keyboard) but the screen is same size.
You can easily hold it and turn the pages with either hand.
Unlike the Kindle 3, there is no physical keyboard on any Kindle 4 model.
The $79 Kindle model is Wi-Fi only, which means you have to be in an area that has Internet that you can connect. The 3G models can connect to the free to the Internet almost anywhere there is cell phone coverage to download books from Amazon.com.
Internet connection is not required to read books that you already have stored on your Kindle book reader, just to download new books.
On the starter $79 Kindle is a D-pad and virtual keyboard displayed on the screen. You have to scroll to each letter to spell things out.
This can be a little cumbersome, but you probably will not be using the keyboard a lot anyway to read books. The proprietary Amazon Silk browser built in to connect to the Internet to download books is very smooth.
The new Kindle 4 models features Pearl E-Ink, which reads like real paper and delivers crisp images even in bright sunlight. The matte screen has a wide viewing angle with much less glare than a glass panel.
Fully Customizable On-Screen Experience
You can change font size, typeface, line spacing, words per line, and rotation from portrait to landscape, making books viewable with the Kindle upright or sideways for a larger viewing area.
There is no accelerometer inside, which is need to change the profile automatically – but you can easily select it from the on-screen menu system.
The page turn rate on the Kindle 4 models is about the same as the previous Kindle 3 models.
You can also read PDF books and other documents. The graphics and fonts all look good and sharp.
However, if the typeface or font is too small you can manually zoom larger, for a more comfortable read.

Compare Kindles – Touch and Kindle Touch 3G
At $99, with special offers and sponsored screensaver ($139 for no ads on the screen), the Kindle Touch offers an extremely easy to use touch screen. Pages are turned by simply touching the side of the screen in the direction you want to go.
Menus are accessed by touching the top of the screen. This makes it easy to hold in one hand and tap the pages as you go.
The Kindle Touch is also just a Wi-Fi model like the new Kindle starter model. The only Kindle 4 E-Ink model with free Internet access is the Kindle Touch 3G.
The Kindle Touch and Kindle Touch 3G models have more storage than their little brother Kindle does–the Touch and Touch 3G can hold up to 3000 books on 4GB of storage.
Battery life on both Kindle Touch models last an impressive 2 months on average with the wireless off.
With Whispersync technology on both, the last page you read is synchronized across all your devices you have your Kindle apps on, whether PC, Mac or smart phone, so you don’t have to worry about where you left off.
Both Touch models have audio capabilities including Text-to-Speech. Just set it to read the text, sit back and relax.
Alternatively, play your favorite audio books or MP3’s. It comes with speakers mounted in the rear of the unit, or plug in your headphones with the 3.5 mm stereo audio jack.
The Kindle Touch 3G takes the convenience of a Kindle to a completely new level. For $149 ($180 without advertising), you get free 3G wireless access, with no download limits, annual contracts or regular fees.
Access the internet anywhere in the world without hunting for a wireless hotspot. It uses AT&T’s high-speed data network in the United States with coverage by affiliated companies in other countries.
The new Kindle 4 E-Ink models represent the clearest, most readable text in the Kindle family to date. Add in the convenience of the Touch screen, in the higher model, or Wi-Fi plus free 3-G Internet access for downloading books on the top of the line Kindle book reader version.
The latest Kindle generation 4 three new Kindle 4 models is now the most popular E-Ink Kindles ever.

Choose From Over One Million Books
With the built-in Wi-Fi, you can connect to Amazon and download most books in less than 60 seconds. The starter model Kindle 4 can hold up to 1400 books on 2GB of internal storage.
The current selections available to download lets you choose from over 1,000,000 books, magazines, newspapers, and more. Most books are at the $9.99 price point and many have free sample chapters.
In many communities, you can now borrow books from the public library electronically through your Kindle.
The battery will let you read the equivalent of ½ hour a day for a month with no recharge (with the Wi-Fi off). It comes with a Micro-USB cable but no AC adapter—you can charge the battery up through your computer or a USB to electrical outlet adapter, available separately for around $10.
Also on the new Kindle 4 models is an on-screen dictionary, accessed by highlighting a word. You can also add “notes” at various points in the text and then scroll through all of your notes at once.
This might be a good feature for a student in the family.
There is no audio or “text-to-read” or MP3 playing features, as on the Kindle Touch models. The starter $79 Kindle 4 is really just for downloading and reading books, which is all many people want in a Kindle e-reader.
